The Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church in Rennes-le-Château, renowned for its enigmatic history and unique architecture, is currently undergoing renovation projects led by the municipality. These works aim to preserve and restore this iconic monument, listed as a historic monument since 1994.
A renovation project underway
The Rennes-le-Château City Hall has launched a public procurement contract for the renovation of the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church. This project includes restoration work on the building, with the aim of preserving its architectural and artistic integrity. The contract is being divided into several specialized lots.
The planned work includes:
Restoration of the roof and gutters, with replacement of the zinc and repainting.
Installation of all-LED interior lighting, enhancing the architectural features.
The renovation of the interior walls, including surface analysis, scraping of peeling paint, and restoration of decorative plasterwork.
A phased approach
The mayor of Rennes-le-Château, Alexandre Painco, has indicated that renovation work on the church will not begin for several years. This period will allow for preliminary studies to be carried out, grant applications to be prepared, and the necessary funding to be obtained.
A heritage to preserve
The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, with its unique features such as the holy water font supported by the statue of Asmodeus and its stained-glass windows by Henri Feur, is an emblematic site of Rennes-le-Château’s heritage. The renovation projects undertaken by the municipality aim to preserve this exceptional heritage for future generations.
